The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

by Carson McCullers

A deaf mute becomes the confidant of various misfits in a small town in Georgia during the 1930s.   This novel highlights a profound sense of moral and spiritual isolation in each of the characters.  It also stresses the racial tensions of the time.   This is Carson McCullers first novel, written when she was only 23 years old.  I really fell in love with the language of this book and was absorbed by it from the very first page.
