December Book Events


Thursday, December 2nd @ 7pm

Rosalynn Carter has become an advocate for improving the treatment of the mentally ill.

Her new book, Within Our Reach, shows how far we’ve come since her husband’s campaign days and how much more needs to be done.  At this event, she will discuss the state of mental illness and sign books.

If you cannot attend the reading, signed books are available for reserve at A Cappella Books.

Emory History event

Gary Hauk is considered Emory University’s resident historian partnered with Sally Wolff King in his latest Emory book.  Where Courageous Inquiry Leads: The Emerging Life of Emory University is composed of different Emory faculty and staff contributing stories of historic moments, movements experience on campus, and in-depth profiles.

Executive director of the Georgia Center for the Book, Bill Starr retraced the 1773 journey of James Boswell and Samuel Johnson through the Scottish Highlands.  Whisky, Kilts, and the Loch Ness Monster: Traveling Through Scotland with Boswell and Johnson covers the literary aspects but also is part travelogue.  There will be a kilted bagpiper escorting the author to the stage.

Please note that the Decatur Library will be closed for a furlough day on December 6, but this event will go on as scheduled. Admission will be through the auditorium door at the rear of the lower parking level.

Tuesday, December 7th @ 7pm

Before a live audience WABE’s Valerie Jackson will record her program with guest Michele Norris.  Norris is the host of NPR’s “All Things Considered”.  She planned on writing a book about the hidden conversation on race in this country but in doing so she discovered some painful family secrets.  The Grace of Silence researches her own racial legacy and how silence was used for self-protection and survival.

Susan Spain is the author and Elizabeth Dulemba is the illustrator of the new book, The Twelve Days of Christmas in Georgia.  Based on the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, two cousins make their way through the Peach State visiting some of the best know sites.

The Working White House: Two Centuries of Traditions and Memories is a Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition.  It tells the stories of the people who have worked for the presidents and their families.  The exhibit covers the time from William Taft to George W. Bush through oral histories and historical images, documents, and objects.  See behind the scenes with examples of the daily work and enduring relationships that form.
