For a man who only works on campus from 9:30pm-12:30am, Sunday-Thursday, Carl Beck sure is popular. You can not say his name without a student or an Alumna gushing about how much they love Carl. He is quite an endearing man who is always ready with an adventurous tale that involves him jumping out of airplanes during World War II or trying to evade the German army.
If you haven’t had a chance to meet Carl or just want to learn more about him, numerous organizations have captured his story, including the Agnes Scott Profile. Check out these links to take a journey into his memorable and heroic past:
- Vetrans History Project
- Georgia Public Broadcasting – Georgia World War II Oral History Project
- Marietta Daily Journal
- Returning Liberators
- Dutch Reenactment Group
To put his tales into context, check out books on D-Day in SOPHIA or search for articles in America: History & Life or Historical Abstracts.
Thank you, Carl! And to all of our troops!
Happy Veterans Day Carl!
