Rita Dove attended the Agnes Scott Writers’ Festival in 1992 and is attending this year as well. Dove is best known for her successful poetry career, which started in 1980 with the release of her poetry collection The Yellow House on the Corner. McCain houses this work, along with a number of her other poetry collections. Many of these works are based on historical events and periods, such as the civil rights era. Dove has earned numerous titles and gained much recognition for these works. These titles include the Poet Laureate of the United States and Consultant to the Library of Congress in ‘93, ‘94, and ‘95, along with awards such as the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry and the 1996 National Humanities Medal. Dove now works as a professor of English at the University of Virginia.
